Progress so far

So far we have edited 1:08 minutes of the 3:50 minute song. Our editing is going well, focusing on having short cut shots so that the music video is fast paced and not boring. We have used noise effects to make the water shots grainy and black and white effects on the beach shots to make them look vintage. We will export our progress so far and get feedback from teachers and students, as well as other people not associated with media to see how we can improve.

Editing the website:

A2 music videos, good vs bad.

Marks: 20/60

What went wrong?
  • The lip syncing is not in sync and the effort from the performers is half-hearted.
  • There is no enthusiasm what so ever in playing the instruments in the perfomance part, for some of it you can notice that they aren't even touching the strings.
  • There is no continuation of the story line, he is just aimlessly running around, the story isn't clear. Is this performance or narrative? They have tried to do both and it doesn't work.
  • The editing is poor, there are no transitions or real effects.

Marks: 60/60

What went well?
  • This video is so slick, you can tell a lot of time and effort went into rehearsals and planning to make sure everything went successfully.
  • The lip syncing is really in sync and looks professional.
  • The set is professional and the lighting helps to create really good shots that would make the editing process easier.
  • Costumes and make-up have been thought about so that everything ties in with the genre and looks continuous.
  • You can tell the editing software must have been good as the editing is slick, professional and really adds to the success of the video, with the split screen being especially noticable as a good feature of this music video.

Letter of permission

Above is a letter to Polydor Ltd asking permission to use Lana's song for our music video, completed by group member Joe.

Risk assessment

Above are our risk assessments for both filming in Southend and at Riverside swimming pool, completed by group member Joe.

Album fonts

Emma experimented with a range of different fonts that could be used for the logo, or just general advertising purposes. We decided that we like fonts that make the letters look thinner and with an outline. These fonts were our favorites and we hope to use of them to use when advertising.

Halfway feedback presentations for other groups

Class halfway feedback for other groups

Alleyways
Overall Stage Presence, Confidence/talent/personality
Came across as a confident band, very well thought through presentation with each person taking turns to talk. Seem to know what they are about and great image.
Music Video idea
Didn't explain their idea which was a let down as we were looking forward to seeing how they work with the song :)

Website/Digipak
Love the idea for the digipak, some more images of the band would have been great.

Music Genre
They explain that they're a electronic, alternative group in the opening.

Unique selling point
They explain that the group consists of 2 boys and 2 girls which isn't commonly seen in the music industry.

Any other comments? what are they doing well?
Seem organised with their image, just need to sort out music video idea :)

Cosmo
Artist Profile
Not a lot about the actual artist; build a profile through interviews etc, as images not enough to be recognized as successful artist
Music video
More concept/performance based. Strange idea, will be very difficult to pull off, but will look amazing if you manage it
Website
Not shown, Facebook looks okay, maybe change the banner?
Unique selling point
Not a lot of popular psychedelic artists in today’s society
Any other comments? what are they doing well?
Build a profile for Cosmo by staging interviews, building a graphically successful website

Alex Echo
Artist Profile
A lot of background information on Echo, good background as an indie artist, more pictures perhaps
Music video
Graphic match of people’s story lines joining up, good idea, but not very well explained
Website
Twitter feed strong; lots of photos and posts
Unique selling point
Indie singer songwriter from Essex is pretty unique
Any other comments? what are they doing well?
Perhaps hold a few photo shoots

Other students videos

Lady Gaga Applause

Here is a very good example of a music A2 video, they have perfromed Lady Gaga Applause which wuld be a very challenging song to pull of just because of how well its already known, Lady Gaga is quite a distinctive character. They would have to make sure that the worked on the image that Lady Gaga is kown for.
Benefits
The group has worked really well on making sure that the costumes were something that Lady Gaga wwould wear. The girl in this video has even made sure that she has put a big headpiece in for example to fit into the character more. They have though a lot about costume and this is what makes the video look more proffesional. I think that costumes are key for a good video. She has also taken a lot of time on doing the make up for the performance. This has also given her a slightly unique look which Lady Gaga is renowned for.
The editing in it is really good it has lots of fast cut shots and slow motion parts in the background of the main performer this is good because it means that there is a lot going on in the shot and doesnt mean that it is boring.
What could be done better
The start of the video doesnt look very proffesional, it looks very obvious that the perfromer is on a school stage. We do not want to do this in our video as it makes it look tacky and it will ruin the whole video. There also sometimes looks like there have been too many costume changes as the character looks very different in every scene and they are not well enough known yet to be able to get away with lots of different identities.

Beyonce- Run The World

This example of an A2 music video was a very brave option to chose from and this pays off, it is a very well known song but and has some iconic dance moves in it but the girls do pull off the video very well and even put there own twist on it at times which is good because it makes it unique and memorable. They did recieve a lot of abuse for this video from some people because at times it looks like they have tried to go for the "sex" image.
Benefits
They have done very well to stick to what they think that a typical Beyonce video would be like and have done well to learn the dances etc for the performance this must have taken a while itself. They have also done very well at getting the costumes correct as this is what Beyonce would wear in some of her videos, they have also done very well in keeping everyone in the same costume as it would look silly if they were just all wearing their own clothes. It shows proffesionalism. They have also done very well at not caring at what people will think about their performance and this is what has helped them to get a good grade. They have also done it in lots of different settings and this is very good as if they kept it all in one area the video would have been too boring to watch.
They have used editing very well also in order to create the quick changes between the shots and this gives it a more proffesional feel.
What could have been done better
They maybe should have thought about lip syncing the words a little better as they cared so much about the perfromance that they didnt really remember about the lip synicning so didnt incorporate that as well as they could have. They could have also made the scenes in the video more original rather than keep copying the same part over and over again. It gets a bit repetitive and boring. Also the green screen bit where the fire is in the background looks very incomeplete and unproffesional as you would not see this in a real artists video. We need to make sure that our video doesnt look too tacky.

Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis - Cant Hold Us

This A2 video is my favourite one out of the three as you can see that they have taken a lot of time and effort into the perfromance and really though about mis en scene with the cosumes and locations.
Benefits
The animantions in the video are extremely clever they have turned it into a comic book type approach which is very clever as it is meant to be fun and lighthearted and this really shows this idea.
The transistions between each different scene is done very well as they freeze the screen on a comic book animation and then the characters are formed from it this must have taken a lot of time and effort to edit well and it has really paid off it makes there video unique to other ones and I think that we need to incoroporate something unique into our video aswell as it will let us stand out from every other normal video and will help us to get the good grades that we want. They have also made the vudeo funny and light hearted and have got the general public involved aswell and this adds to making the video seem more believeable and genuine. I really like how they have taken there own perception on the song and then have made their video from this.
What could be done better
The start of the video is a little bit random but this is about the only thing that I can fault this video for because they have clearly taken a lot of time to do all of the pther aspects of the video proffesionally.

Self evaluation

From this group reflection evaluations completed by my other group members of me, I can conclude the following:

My two greatest strengths are:
  • I am very organised and puncutal, completing any task I am given to the best of my ability
  • Supports group members and I am motivated to doing well, incorperating new ideas
Two skills I need to work on are:
  • I admitted to struggling with editing like the rest of our group, so dedicate some time to learn new skills in Adobe Premiere
  • Perhaps not delegate so many responsibilites to myself
Something I have learned from the group that I wouldn't have learnt on my own is:
  • I am good at motivating and encouraging others when they feel deflated
Any changes that would improve performance in the group:
  • Dedicate time to learning new skills in Adobe Premiere
  • Keep on encouraging others and keeping our group motivated
Overall: we all work so well together, dedicating tasks evenly and supporting each other through discussions. We share ideas and aren't afraid to tell each other when we don't like them.

Group reflection

Below are evaluations of how I work as a member within the group from each of my three other group members, from this I will reflect and complete a self evaluation:
