Digi pack inspiration

Haim's album for 'Days Are Gone' is a really good example of the kind of Digi Pack we could like our Band to have. The idea of three girls being on the cover all dressed in blacks and whites, but each wearing something different. I like the way that each member is positioned, there is no clear lead singer and they all look equal. The plain grass background is also quite effective, and must have been taken from a high angle. We hope to do this kind of thing for our official album cover.
In terms of the actual CD we would have it quite plain like Haim have done with theirs. Some artists also feature themselves on the CD, but we aim to keep this plain and simple with maybe a track list at the bottom as well.
We like the theme all being this grass lawn, and we hope to do this with our idea by having a theme throughout or Digi Pack. When we visit Southend to film for our music video we hope to do a similar thing and have our official Digi Pack images all beach/seaside themed with filter.
The inside images would relate to the cover, but maybe featured from different angles. Haim have frequently done this, and we feel that it looks really effective.

As Lana is one of our inspirations for the music video and song, we would like to have a digi pack that has some feautres that Lana has in hers. Possibly some black and white images that has the same theme as the the Haim album as well. We also like how the font is positioned at the bottom of the album.

As we are visiting a beach we could also have an long shots to go in the Digi pack to relate back to the video.
Instead of having lyWe like how the album flips open and has a card like material instead of a hard plasitc one. This is actually Lana's extended edition album and the orignal album is plastic.
rics on each page we like the idea of just having images in black and white or with a filter of each member, as well as group shots.
We like the idea of the actual CD having a floral print as it links with the image we are going for.

Band logo

After browsing through a range of fonts, we decided that we liked this one the best. We liked how each letter alternates from slightly lower to slightly higher, along with the sketchy effect the letters have. We will use this on posters, the album cover, and just as a general logo to represent the band.

Video Inspiration

This video from the film 'Submarine' is a good example of the idea I had. The whole concept of the vintage filter and a couple spending the day on the beach. The couple would look different in terms of appearance and clothing to make it fit our original idea. The setting may also change as we wanted to have the couple in maybe Camden as the scenery fits the characters more. In terms of the way to camera shots look, that is what we hope to capture. As a group we will watch YouTube videos and work out how to add the vintage, grainy filter over the top.

The water idea came from this Beyoncé music video. We liked the idea of a girl being fully clothed but appearing like she’s drowning. We would hope to find maybe an old wedding dress from a charity shop, or maybe just a dress that will react well when I the water in order to get effective shots. We also like the idea of the girls makeup running down her face, almost helpless and lost in the flash backs. To film this we would need to use a go pro camera in order to get effective underwater shots with the fish eye effect.

Similar genre websites and magazines

Our influences came from multiple artists:

1) Lana Del Rey - we have decided to do a remix of one her songs: 'Black Beauty' by Rex Riot and Ouros, therefore she is our influence.

Her website is quite vintage looking and focuses on the different moods and experiences she has. We could use these features in our artists website.

2) Beyonce - we are using her water-based ideas from 'Halo' as an influence for the water-based idea in our video.

Her website is quite artistic, and features pictures from her recent tour 'On the Run' with her husband Jay-Z. We could use these features in our artists website.

3) Submarine - there is a scene in the film 'Submarine' where they use a vintage filter effect and feature flash backs of 'happy couple' moments. This is something we want to feature in our music video.

Although the website of this is pretty unrelevant to influence our website as it is not a music video, it is quite helpful to see the way media websites are displayed.

Song change

After trying to mix together the 2 orginal songs we were going to use, we decided that it wasn't going to work as they are completly different.

We wanted to mix together 'I know you're Tired' by Charlie Wilson and 'Someday' by Tinie Tempah and Ella Eyre. After many attempts to have the female vocals from Someday as the chorus and the other song to play throughout, we decided that they didn't fit and that we needed to find a new song.

'I know you're Tired' by Charlie Wilson

'Someday' By Tinie Tempah and Emma Eyre

After listening to a range of songs that would still fit with our video concept, we decided to go with this Lana Del Rey remix as it still went with the music video plan. We don't want to change our video ideas as we are happy with them.

Similar genre album covers

Lana Del Rey's album cover:
"Lana Del Rey's music has been noted for its cinematic sound and its references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of the 1950s and 1960s Americana." This is what we will try to achieve with our music video, a cinematic look with a vintage effect of the 50s and 60s

Below is a group of artists who are of similar genre to the artist we have chosen: Lana Del Rey
Ellie Goulding, Marina and the Diamonds, Florence and the Machine, Lily Allen, Charli XCX, Nelly Furtado, The Ting Tings, Foster the People, Mika, La Roux, Eliza Doolittle and Paloma Faith

Below is their album covers:
Looking at these album covers, they are all quite artistic. We will try to incorporate this for our album cover, and include the aspect of having the artist in the center of the shot. Some album covers are quite creative with a retro style, again we will try to include this in ours

Group music video ideas

Feedback:
When presenting this presentation to the class, we received the following feedback:
  • The class liked the idea for my music video as it was a water-based idea and they thought it would be quite unique. The teacher also said that if we could pull off the water shots, they could look beautiful.
  • The class were impressed with Joe's song choice, however his music video idea was not strong so we had to try to think of an idea that could work with his song choice.
  • The class liked Emma's song choice and her music video, as they worked hand in hand. They liked the idea of a vintage filter and Sid and Nancy character effect.
  • The class thought Drea's song choice was good and the performance idea for her music video would work well, but thought it wouldn't be perhaps as effective as mine or Emma's idea.
Conclusion:
After hearing all of the feedback from the class and teachers, we have decided to try and make a remix of mine and Joe's songs, incorporating ideas from both of our music videos. These songs really work well together as they both have slow, dramatic tempo and pace, therefore the drowning/water idea and Emma's vintage filter flashback idea could work really well if we pull of the remix.

Music Video ideas

Beyonce ft. Nicki Minaj - Flawless
This song is quite upbeat and Beyonce as an artist represents feminism. When I imagine this music video I can envisage strong, powerful women in quite a dark room, e.g. they are the light. They are wearing fur coats and have chains etc as a metaphor to show they are in charge. The men top half naked/ wearing nude coloured tops to show their weaknesses and vulnerability. Also, there are human dolls in the room which can be quite easy to play with and create some nice shots for us. All in all, this video will need some costumes and about 10 people, so 7-8 extras.

Bastille - Weight Of Living Part 1
This song is also quite upbeat and Bastille are known to be quite chill. When I imagine this music video I can envisage a journey of three or four bestfriends. The camera can be held from the point of view of an anonymous person who can show close up shots/ behind shots of the group - perhaps walking down a quirky old street or along a pier. The anonymous person only reveals himself at the end when the music stops.

Charlie Wilson - Nobody To Love
This song is quite slow and I don't really know much about the artist. When I imagine this music video I envisage it to be quite powerful as the song is also quite powerful. The main idea that comes to mind is water based, e.g. a woman/man in full clothing underwater trying to catch a breath or in a dark room trying to find the light. Again, they only catch a breath/ find light right at the end of the music video when the music stops. This is quite an extreme idea and we would need an underwater camera etc. so maybe something to just consider.
